Frequently Asked Questions
Are your pieces handmade?
Yes!
Each piece is made by hand in small batches at Elderkiln Ceramics. Some pieces are wheel-thrown, others are hand-built, and no two are ever exactly alike. Small variations in shape, glaze, and texture are part of what makes handmade pottery special.
Are your mugs and bowls food safe?
Yes!
All finished pieces are made from durable stoneware and glazed with food-safe, non-toxic glazes.
Can your pottery go into the dishwasher or microwave?
Technically, yes!
Most pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe.
However, handwashing is always recommended to help preserve the glaze, textures, and overall longevity of handmade pottery.
Pieces featuring overglaze decals, metallic finishes, or lustre details — including real gold accents — should be hand washed only and must not be placed in the microwave. These decorative finishes are more delicate and require gentler care.
To help prevent thermal shock, avoid sudden temperature changes whenever possible.
Each order also includes a small care card with additional information and recommendations to help you enjoy your handmade pottery for years to come!
What is thermal shock?
Thermal shock happens when pottery experiences a sudden change in temperature.
For example:
pouring boiling liquid into a very cold piece
pouring cold liquid into a hot piece
placing a hot ceramic piece onto a cold surface
moving pottery directly from fridge to oven
taking a hot handmade pottery piece outdoors during freezing winter temperatures
Gentle temperature changes help handmade stoneware last for many years.
Why do handmade pieces vary slightly?
Handmade pottery carries the marks of the maker.
Slight variations in glaze flow, texture, carving, or form are natural and part of the charm of artisan ceramics.
No two pieces are ever truly identical.
Do you make custom orders?
Sometimes.
Custom work depends on studio schedule, firing space, and the type of piece requested.
Feel free to reach out through Instagram or the contact page to discuss ideas.
